Researched and updated: 14 October 2026. Independent XM educational guide; not the official XM website. Services and conditions differ by legal entity and region.
An account comparison is useful only if it compares options you can actually open. XM's global account-type page currently presents Standard, Ultra Low and Shares as choices; a different XM regional page describes Ultra Low and Professional accounts. Meanwhile, some Help Center pages discuss Micro accounts. These differences are an important reason not to copy an old list of account names and call it the definitive XM offering for all countries.
This guide starts with the available legal entity, then compares cost structure, lot size, platform, swap conditions and operational needs. Its purpose is to help you ask better questions before selecting an account, not to prescribe a single 'best XM account' for everyone.
Confirm the legal entity and current terms provided to you. This independent guide does not promise approval, account protection or profitable trades. Forex and CFD trading involves a high risk of capital loss.
Why the regional account menu matters
XM uses a brand across legal entities and location-specific websites. An account page can show options selected for that region, and a client may have additional restrictions based on residency or classification. A plan advertised on a page intended for one country might not appear during onboarding for another country. That is a difference in actual offer, not merely a translation problem.
Check the country selected at registration, then write down the legal company in your agreement. Only then compare the accounts the company is currently offering you. The current global account-type page and MENA account page are concrete examples of differing menus.
Standard: begin with spread and order-size flexibility
A Standard account is generally a way to trade conventional lot units with pricing information presented through an account specification. For many people this is straightforward, but the label alone does not prove that it offers the lowest cost. Ask whether the quoted spread is typical or only a minimum, and whether there are other instrument-specific charges.
Even if the minimum permitted trade size seems small, a position may still expose substantial funds when leverage and volatility interact. If your balance is modest, calculate the cash loss at a realistic stop distance rather than choosing volume merely because the account permits it.
Ultra Low: low quoted spread is not the whole bill
An Ultra Low account may appeal to traders who place more frequent orders and therefore pay attention to spreads. But the meaningful comparison includes commissions where applicable, financing for overnight positions, execution and the instruments available. The official Help Center notes that swap-free treatment on an Ultra Low account applies only to selected instruments, not automatically to every market.
A trader holding gold through multiple nights may evaluate this account differently from an intraday EUR/USD trader. If you cannot locate the cost specification for your exact symbol and entity, avoid assuming a headline figure will apply to your trades. Compare realistic times and trade sizes before deciding.
Shares, Professional and Micro: names are not interchangeable
The global page includes Shares among the visible account options. A region-specific XM page lists a Professional account aimed at clients meeting additional categorization criteria. Other Help Center information refers to Micro accounts and lot units. These should not be merged into one flat worldwide chart: product legal form, eligibility and client protections may differ.
An account called Shares may have different rights, platform requirements or fee schedules from a stock CFD. 'Professional' is also not just a marketing synonym for someone who trades often. Where formal client classification exists, legal protections and leverage rules can differ, so understand exactly what a professional classification would change before pursuing it.
The comparison table that avoids false precision
The table below summarizes questions rather than promising specific fees or leverage across every location. Use the actual contract and current account specification to fill in the missing figures.
| Consideration | Standard | Ultra Low | Other region-based offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trading costs | Verify typical spread and other fees | Verify spread, commission and financing | Check the separate plan's current documentation |
| Lot size | Read unit and minimum volume | Read symbol and account specification | Do not assume forex units apply to shares |
| Platform | Confirm MT4/MT5 support | Confirm platform and symbols | Verify whether an exclusive platform is required |
| Eligibility | Depends on legal entity and location | Depends on legal entity and location | May require classification or additional criteria |
Micro lots, standard lots and position risk
Lot sizes are especially important for beginners. A standard forex lot is conventionally 100,000 units of the base currency, while one micro lot is conventionally 1,000 units. A broker account may describe volumes in units that differ from the conventional labels, so identify the exact contract size and volume step that the platform uses.
For EUR/USD in a USD-denominated account, a 0.10 standard-lot position is commonly worth about $1 per pip, before costs. If a trader accepts a hypothetical 35-pip stop, the initial movement exposure is about $35, without accounting for spreads, slippage and conversion. The same number of lots in another instrument might imply very different risk. This is why account choice should follow position-size math, not precede it.
Swap-free claims need instrument-level checking
A plan that advertises reduced or special swap conditions may still charge financing on instruments outside the selected list, and an eligibility policy may change. XM's official FAQ directs users to Symbol Information in the platform to inspect applicable swap details. Do not interpret a blanket 'swap-free' slogan as universal protection from all overnight costs.
When comparing accounts for swing trading, simulate the position with the holding period you actually use. A lower spread on entry could be outweighed by financing and conversion costs over several nights. For active day trading, a smaller swap component may make execution and total round-trip cost more relevant.
What to verify before selecting a platform
Some account choices may be designed for specific MetaTrader versions. MT4 and MT5 use distinct account credentials, expert-advisor ecosystems and instrument support. XM's help articles explain that MT4 credentials do not simply log into an MT5 account. The XM App may support account management alongside trading, but availability can vary.
If a strategy uses an MT4 Expert Advisor, confirm the code, server, symbols and risk parameters work on the account offered. If you want stock CFDs or other multi-asset products, verify the available instruments and their legal form for your chosen platform. Do not open an account based only on its label and then discover that your trading workflow is unsupported.
A checklist for making an account choice
First select the actual company and country offer. Next compare contract size and minimum volume, typical spread, per-side or round-trip commission, overnight financing, base-currency conversion and withdrawal terms. Then check platform availability and whether the instrument you intend to trade is offered. Finally, size a hypothetical trade to a loss amount your budget can support.
This process often reveals that the account with the smallest advertised spread is not automatically the best overall choice. The independent XM Broker Review provides the wider entity and risk context.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ultra Low always cheaper than Standard?
Not necessarily. Compare the executed spread, applicable commissions, holding costs and other charges on the exact symbol and account available in your jurisdiction.
Does every XM customer have access to the Shares account?
Do not assume so. Availability, eligibility and legal form depend on the entity, region and the current onboarding options.
Can I choose an account from a different regional website to obtain better leverage?
Do not bypass geographic restrictions or misrepresent residency. Follow the current terms and applicable local laws.
