Researched and updated: 14 October 2026. Independent XM educational guide; not the official XM website. Services and conditions differ by legal entity and region.
Trading fees are easiest to misunderstand when they are presented as a single attractive number. A spread can be very low on a product brochure and still be only one part of the amount a trader pays. Depending on the account, instrument and holding period, commissions, overnight financing, currency conversion and slippage may affect the final result.
This guide explains how to assemble those components into an all-in cost for forex trades and why the calculation should be repeated for gold or other CFDs. The dollar amounts below are deliberately hypothetical examples for learning the arithmetic. They are not live XM spreads, commissions, backtest results or a promise of execution quality.
Confirm the legal entity and current terms provided to you. This independent guide does not promise approval, account protection or profitable trades. Forex and CFD trading involves a high risk of capital loss.
Start with the spread you actually trade
The spread is the gap between a market's quoted bid and ask. For a long trade, the buy entry is normally based on the ask, while closing at the bid creates an immediate transaction cost. Brokers may advertise a minimum spread, but a minimum is not a guaranteed average throughout the trading day. Spreads can widen around economic announcements, market handovers or low-liquidity periods.
A useful test is to compare the spread at the times you normally trade rather than at a random quiet moment. A London-session scalper, an Asian-session swing trader and someone holding through a major inflation release may experience different spreads. Record the symbol, time, account and whether you measured bid/ask before or after placing the order.
Commission: per side is not per trade
Commission descriptions often appear in different units. Some account terms quote an amount per traded lot per side, so opening and closing a position each attract a charge. Other descriptions provide a round-trip figure that includes both directions. Confusing them can make a low-spread account appear cheaper than it actually is.
For example, suppose a purely hypothetical account charges $3.50 per side for one standard lot. A complete open-and-close transaction would cost $7 in commission if both sides were charged equally. That amount is added to the spread cost; it does not replace it. Use the commission schedule for your exact XM entity and account rather than assuming this illustrative fee is a current XM quote.
A worked EUR/USD cost example
On EUR/USD, a standard lot commonly represents 100,000 EUR. In a USD-denominated account, one pip is normally approximately $10 for a standard lot. That lets us compare two fictional fee structures without pretending they are XM's current conditions. Other account currencies require a conversion adjustment.
| Illustrative plan | Spread | Commission (round trip) | Approx. total per 1 lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model A | 1.1 pips ≈ $11 | $0 | $11 |
| Model B | 0.35 pips ≈ $3.50 | $7 | $10.50 |
| Model C | 0.2 pips ≈ $2 | $10 | $12 |
In this example Model B is marginally cheaper than Model A, while Model C is not cheaper despite having the tightest spread. The figures exclude slippage, financing, deposit/withdrawal conversion and any other charge. Their only purpose is to show why a good comparison uses a complete formula.
The fee formula to keep in your trading journal
A practical journal can record approximate transaction cost as spread cost plus opening and closing commissions plus any relevant financing and conversion charges, with slippage measured separately. That estimate becomes most useful when you compare it with your planned stop distance and average trade size.
Suppose a hypothetical EUR/USD trade has a 20-pip stop, and your combined execution cost is 1.5 pips. Cost alone would account for about 7.5% of the price distance to the stop, before any additional adverse slippage. For a strategy whose expected gross profit is only a few pips, fees can consume a large part of that edge. Profitability cannot be inferred from the cost figure alone.
Swaps and overnight financing change the comparison
An overnight swap is a financing credit or debit associated with keeping certain positions open across a rollover point. Applicable rates may depend on the symbol, the side of the trade, prevailing market factors and the relevant account rules. A position held for several nights may accumulate costs that are not visible from the entry spread.
XM's official Help Center says not every instrument on an Ultra Low account is automatically swap-free. Traders are directed to inspect Symbol Information for the specific market. The words 'low swap' and 'swap-free' should therefore be tested instrument by instrument and within the legal entity serving the account.
Why EUR/USD maths cannot be copied directly to gold
XAUUSD is often quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. But the monetary effect of a one-dollar price move depends on how many ounces the broker defines per lot and the position volume you select. If you insert 'one lot' into a forex pip-value calculator without changing its contract assumptions, your gold risk estimate may be seriously wrong.
Start with the platform's actual XAUUSD contract specification, then calculate the currency exposure of a hypothetical move. For illustration only, if a product represented 100 ounces per lot, a one-dollar price move on one lot would correspond to approximately $100 before charges. That is not a statement about the current XM contract size for your account; verify it directly.
Conversion, deposits and withdrawal-related costs
A trading account may use a base currency different from the instrument's profit currency or your bank account. Conversions can introduce spreads or processing rates at deposit, settlement or withdrawal. Brokers also rely on banks and payment providers whose own policies may affect the received amount. Avoid treating a 'no broker deposit fee' claim as proof that every bank, card network or conversion is free.
XM's Help Center describes deposit and withdrawal practices and notes that exchange rates may be applied by XM or payment processors. The funding options visible in the secure account area, along with the actual amount received, are more relevant than an old screenshot from another country.
Slippage: the price you request is not always the price you get
Even without an explicit commission, a stop order or fast market order can execute at a different price than expected. Slippage may be favorable or unfavorable, and execution conditions vary with liquidity and volatility. This is one reason demo-account arithmetic does not fully capture live trading cost.
Record requested price, executed price, direction, lot size, timestamp, spread and any commission. A meaningful execution-cost review needs multiple representative trades, not a single unusually good or bad fill. We have not independently conducted such a live XM execution study here.
A cost checklist before choosing an XM account
Confirm the entity and account. Read the market's contract specification, spread schedule and commission terms. Check how swaps apply to your holding period, whether additional conversion costs exist, and what the broker says about payment fees. Use a realistic time-of-day quote and include conservative slippage when deciding how much capital a position could lose.
Only then compare the figures with your strategy's expected trade duration and risk allowance. Our independent XM Broker Review provides the broader account and regulatory context; this article focuses on calculating costs rather than selecting a provider for you.
Frequently asked questions
Does zero commission mean zero trading cost?
No. Spread, financing, conversion and execution differences can still apply.
Does the lowest spread account always win?
No. Commission and holding costs may outweigh a spread difference. Calculate the full expected cost for your specific instruments and holding time.
Are all XM Ultra Low instruments swap-free?
No universal assumption is appropriate. XM's own Help Center says selected instruments qualify and recommends checking Symbol Information.
